Rylans divorce and dark times as he makes Celebrity Gogglebox return with mum

After being absent from last year's series, presenter and TV personality Rylan Clark will be returning to Celebrity Gogglebox tonight along with his mum Linda.

The pair are all set to take their place on the sofa after a year's break for a Pride special of Celebrity Gogglebox, also featuring Nick Grimshaw and other famous British LGBTQ+ personalities.

The mother and son duo proved to be a hit pair on the first two series of the celeb spin-off of the Channel 4 show. However, they didn't return for the third series in 2021 because Rylan was taking time off from the spotlight.

Linda was also suffering with illness after a flare-up of her Crohn's disease.

Rylan, who divorced his husband Dan Neal last year, spoke openly about his mental health and took a break from work soon after.

Here's what you need to know about his relationship and how it affected him.

Rylan Clark and Dan Neal's relationship timeline

Rylan Clark and Dan Neal met when the latter participated in Big Brother in 2013. Sparks flew when Dan first met Rylan – who was hosting Big Brother's Bit On The Side – during his exit interview from the reality show.

In September 2014, the pair got engaged, tying the knot in 2015. However, they announced they were divorcing in June 2021 after six years of marriage.

After his divorce, which Rylan said was due to "a number of mistakes" he regretted making, the presenter announced he'd be taking time away from work to focus on his mental health.

He said: "I have taken time away from work as I am not in a good place at the moment and am seeking help.

"I am trying to take each day at a time and would like to thank everyone for their support and for respecting our privacy at this time."

Rylan Clark later bravely revealed his struggle to cope with their breakup, telling the Observer that he needed to be hospitalised for his own safety after having "dark thoughts" and taking things "a bit far".

He explained: "I did not know myself at certain points. I was having thoughts and doing things that made me…f**ked up, for want of a better word. I didn’t understand why I was doing that to myself. So, I went away for a bit."

He said the divorce and his job in the public eye contributed to a breakdown, sharing that he never thought he could "get that ill" and adding: "I didn’t think I’d be here. I didn’t think I could continue."

Speaking about learning to be more in control of himself and his job, he said: "I’ve not had control for so long, I feel like Britney! Because my life was really my job. I feel like I lost a lot of me."
