Susanna Reid grills Matt Hancock on welcoming Ukrainian family into his home

Susanna Reid grilled health secretary Matt Hancock on Good Morning Britain as he prepares to welcome Ukrainian refugees into his family home.

On Tuesday (March 15), the brunette broadcaster, 51, and her co-host Richard Madeley welcomed the disgraced MP onto the show to discuss the new rehoming scheme for Ukrainians fleeing the country.

As the trio discussed the new Homes for Ukraine programme – which has seen more than 45,000 Britons offer up their homes – the broadcaster couldn’t help but ask how many people he will be accepting into his family home.

And as he explained how five refugees will be staying with the family for an undetermined amount of time, the mum-of-three asked why more of his colleagues aren’t offering up their second home to those in need.

As the politician revealed how he would be giving up his Suffolk home, the doting dad explained that his family also have the privilege of staying in his second home in the heart of London while they support Ukrainian refugees.

Susanna asked bluntly: “Should every MP, seeing as every MP – well most of them – has two homes, should every MP offer the homes they aren’t spending a large portion of time to a refugee like you?"

As Matt Hancock shifted uncomfortably in his seat, he said: “You invite me to become extremely unpopular amongst my colleagues.”

As Richard Madeley started to protest and support his colleague's point, he added: “The answer is that I really think that people who don’t want to and people who can’t – I don’t think that we should say there’s anything bad about that or wrong.

“There’s some MPs who have security issues which means that they definitely can’t and I understand that and there’s lots of people who just don’t have the opportunity to do it."
