First came roles in Marvel Captain America and Avengers movies, as well as a cameo in Ant-Man. Now, Anthony Mackie is getting his own show. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier release date has been announced as March 19. Sam Wilson (Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) continue their adventures after Avengers: Endgame. But, before he first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mackie didn’t even know what Marvel role he would play.
Mackie appeared on IMDb’s That Scene with Dan Patrick podcast on Feb. 9. Looking back on his Marvel work prior to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Mackie revealed how he had to accept a mystery role.
Before ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ Anthony Mackie always wanted to be a Marvel superhero
Prior to his Marvel role, Mackie starred in movies like The Hurt Locker, She Hate Me and 8 Mile. He always had his eye on Marvel, though, before they were even doing streaming series like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
“The first time I saw the first Iron Man and I saw what Marvel was doing and how dynamic these characters were, I knew I wanted to be a part of that universe,” Mackie said. “I just got lucky because they wanted me too. It was a marriage made in heaven.”
Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe was complicated for Anthony Mackie
Marvel wansn’t your usual Hollywood audition. It was a process for Mackie.
“When I went to my rep about my interest in Marvel it was more of a thing of not right now and they said, ‘If something comes up, we’ll let you know,’” Mackie said.
Then, when Marvel had a role for Mackie, they were still secretive.
“Then you get the call,” Mackie said. “When you get the call you have to fly to LA and you have a meeting and they sit you down and they say, would you be interested in doing a movie with us? We can’t tell you what the movie is or what the character will be, but would you like to do it? And nobody would say no to that.”
‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ will continue where Captain America left off
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has a lot of questions to answer. A big one is who will become Captain America after Steve Rogers. Mackie said his new show will continue the tone people depend on from Marvel movies.
“I think they’re a great escape,” Mackie said. “What our society and not only our country but our world being what it is, everybody wants that feeling or relief that ability to escape. I think when you see the good guys win, it kind of makes you believe that the good guys will actually win in real life when honest and truth prevail. So, I think a lot of people just use these movies as the great escape and they have a huge attachment to these characters because of it.”
