The fourth season of The Good Doctor will begin on Monday, November 2 on ABC. Ahead of the return of the medical drama, the stars of the show have been sharing a bit more about what fans can expect. One thing teased is some distance between Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) and Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) – here’s why this is.

Why can’t Lea and Shaun be together?

The third season of The Good Doctor ended with a resolution to the will they/won’t they dynamic between Shaun and Lea.

Earlier on in the show, Shaun finally came clean about how he felt for her, turning up on her doorstep and confessing his love.

While Lea rejected him at the time, in the finale she turned up outside where he had been trapped inside a flooding brewery.

When he made it out alive, she kissed him and confessed how she felt the same way about him.

However, now heading into season four of the show, the latest trailer suggests there will be some distance between the pair.

The trailer opens on both of them video calling each other from their beds.

Throughout the day, Shaun is then seen on calls with Lea as she tells him she misses him.

Shaun then says: “I love Lea but we can’t be together. I want this to be over.”

The trailer teases the reason they are apart is because of the restrictions coronavirus COVID-19 has placed on them.

This is especially the case as Shaun and the team is seen on the front line of the pandemic.

So far fans know the first episode will be addressing what life has been like for the doctors at the St Bonaventure Hospital during the virus.

Speaking more about the storyline, the stars opened up during the 2020 New York Comic-Con panel.

Freddie Highmore said: “So, we start season four with very much the two of them in that relationship, which will bring its own struggles.

“Especially in a time like we’re living in now, with the virus and distancing.

“It will bring a whole new set of complications to their relationship.

“But it’ll be interesting to see how that will continue to evolve.”

However, it seems like the series will not focus on coronavirus throughout the whole outing.

This means Shaun and Lea should be together again quite quickly after the opening two episodes.

Creator David Shore confirmed it will only be dealt with in these two episodes during the Comic-Con panel.

He explained: “On the one hand, we need to deal with it, and do it in an honest but entertaining way.

“But we’ve been living with this so much for the last six months…

“I do think we have a responsibility, as entertainers, to provide a little bit of an escape.”

The Good Doctor season 4 will be released on November 2 on ABC.
