HBO will be taking on a new fantasy epic following on from its immense success with Game of Thrones. The American broadcaster is making a small screen version of the video game The Last of Us. Express.co.uk has all the details about the bleak, post-apocalyptic drama series including the release date, cast, trailer and more.

When will The Last of Us be released?

HBO has yet to confirm when it will be releasing its highly anticipated adaptation for The Last of Us.

The Last of Us series was announced by the broadcaster back in 2020 and although there is no release date, it could well fill the hole left by the end of The Walking Dead when it finally wraps up in 2022.

Depending on the rate of coronavirus infections and where filming will take place could affect the release date for The Last of Us.

However, in the best-case scenario the drama could be hitting screens either in 2021 or 2022.

Who is in the cast of The Last of Us?

HBO has started announcing cast members with Game of Thrones alumni and British actress Bella Ramsey leading the show as its young protagonist Ellie.

Joining her will be Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal, who will be playing her companion Joel.

Given this is a big-budget production for HBO, viewers can expect some recognisable faces which will be announced in due course.

Along with the cast, Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin has been drafted in to work on the scripts for The Last of Us, alongside the video game’s creator Neil Druckmann.

What will happen in The Last of Us?

The Last of Us is set two decades after an illness cripples the world with civilisation in ruins and those infected being transformed into mutants baying for blood.

The story imagines a ravaged world with few survivors left in it and 14-year-old Ellie seen as the last hope for humanity.

A character called Joel Miller will hired to smuggle teenager Ellie out of a quarantine zone with the duo travelling across a dangerous America.

They will be forced to depend on each other for survival with Joel trying to keep her safe.

Speaking last year following the initial announcement about The Last of Us, Druckmann said of Mazin: “From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us.

“With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece.

“I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”

While Mazin told The Hollywood Reporter: “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus.”

He added: “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”
