Lucy Alexander disappointed fans with the announcement she was leaving Homes Under the Hammer back in 2016. After 13 years co-presenting the show, she had become part of the furniture for many viewers. But why did the star decided to walk away from the series?
Why did Lucy Alexander leave Homes Under the Hammer?
News first arrived of Lucy Alexander’s departure from Homes Under the Hammer in June of 2016.
It felt like an abrupt decision for fans of the show, as the star left the series the following month.
Co-presenter Martin Roberts continues to present in her absence, but now some viewers are wondering why Alexander decided to leave in the first place.
Alexander originally announced her decision on Twitter, taking to the social media platform to break the sad news.
Alexander wrote: “It’s with a huge heavy heart I’m stepping down, it’s not the outcome I wanted but to pursue other work and a commercial deal I had to leave.” (sic)
Fans were shocked by the news, with many of them rushing to the comments to share their disappointment.
One fan commented: “Sorry to hear this. Some people make good programs great, and you are one of those people. Such a shame you couldn’t do both.”
“You will be very sadly missed by ALL the viewers but good luck in your new venture,” another added.
A third wrote: “Oh no! You’re one of the main reasons I watch it!”
Alexander’s comments were echoed by Roberts during a Twitter Q&A in January 2021.
One fan asked: “How come Lucy isn’t presenting anymore, just isn’t the same without you two #askmartinmonday #bringbacklucy #homesunderthehammer.” (sic)
Roberts replied: “Lucy left to pursue other opportunities but like you I miss her. And who knows what will happen in the future?”
Following Homes Under the Hammer, Alexander did successfully pursue other deals, being offered several new projects.
Most recently the star could be seen presenting Channel 4’s Bang on Budget, a show which helps homeowners transform their home’s interiors on a budget.
She could also be regularly seen presenting videos for Carpet Right, staying close to her Homes Under the Hammer specialty of interior design.
Now, Martin Roberts is joined by a number of new co-presenters including Dion Dublin, Martel Maxwell, Jacqui Joseph, and Tommy Walsh.
The show is just as popular as ever, with the new hosts proving to be popular with long-time viewers.
All the new presenters bring a diversity of experience to the show, with Dublin being an ex-pro footballer for England.
Maxwell is an experienced journalist, formerly writing for The Scottish Sun and joining the team in 2017.
Joseph came from presenting similar shows such as Room 2 B You, a 15-part makeover series on Discovery Home.
Walsh is best known for presenting Ground Force between 1997 and 2005, co-hosting the show with Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock.
Homes Under the Hammer airs weekdays at 10am and Sundays at 10.30am on BBC One.
