Yellowstone has quickly become one of the Paramount Network’s most popular dramas – and it shows no signs of slowing down with season four in full swing and a number of spin-offs in the pipeline. As season four edges towards its inevitably explosive climax, Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) finds himself at the centre of some of the most intriguing storylines as he continues to try and protect his father John’s (Kevin Costner) ranch while facing a potential love triangle with wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Avery (Tanya Beatty).
The outcome of the aforementioned predicaments will remain a mystery until the season four finale rolls around but in the meantime, Grimes has opened up about his feelings for when Kayce’s story eventually concludes.
It is worth noting that Yellowstone season four hasn’t been billed as the show’s final outing, although season five is also yet to be renewed or confirmed by Paramount or showrunner Taylor Sheridan.
Nevertheless, with so much turmoil coming Kayce’s and the Dutton’s way so far, actor Grimes has admitted he’s contemplated how he sees the series ending.
Speaking on the new official Yellowstone podcast with co-star Jefferson White – who plays Jimmy Hurdstrom – Grimes opened up about his thoughts on the ending of the show while paying tribute to the cast and crew.
“The beauty of the west is at the core of everything we do here,” Grimes began as he and White discussed the picturesque Montana backdrop of the show.
“Yeah, absolutely,” White agreed. “Nature in Montana itself and the ranch are at the very heart of the show, and another theme is family.
“That’s a theme that’s very sort of foundational to the show. So will you talk a little bit about working with Wes [Bentley], working with Kelly [Reilly], working with Dave [Annable], working with Kevin [Costner] and that sort of family that is at the core of the entire show that you’ve been working with for four years now?”
Grimes then divulged: “Man, it is such a blessing to work with these people.
“I mean, people always say this about the jobs they’re on, (but) I feel so lucky to be able to go to work with all of these fantastic actors and so many talented people from our cast to our crew to Taylor – who I think is the greatest writer out there.
“I think he has a sixth sense for sweet, kind people.
“It’s just such a good group and you know, we didn’t actually get to shoot this year, we got pushed back.”
During the coronavirus-forced delays to filming, Grimes admitted he ended up feeling “anxiety” as he contemplated not working with the Yellowstone crew again.

“I really missed it, man,” he added before addressing the series ending. “I found myself… It was like something was missing.
“And I kind of like, I think about when this show is ‘over over’ and I get a little anxiety about the end of it because I just love this group of people so much.
“And I know you know that too, I mean we really have a great time making this thing.”
Luckily for Grimes, the Yellowstone universe continues to go from strength to strength so it looks like Kayce will be hanging around for some time yet.
At the end of season three, fans feared Grimes and Kayce’s time on the show would come to an end after he, John and Beth (Kelly Reilly) were ambushed in murderous attacks.
Luckily, season four confirmed all three managed to make it out of the attacks alive but the drama didn’t stop there.
However, heading into a possible season five Kayce will have a huge decision to make when it comes to his family life with Monica and son Tate (Brecken Merrill).
Following the reintroduction of Avery and her making no secret of her feelings towards him, could Kayce’s marriage be done for?
Yellowstone season 4 airs Sundays on the Paramount Network in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
