You season four is already in development at Netflix and fans are busy speculating on how the showrunners could possibly top season three’s shock finale. Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) killed Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) after she attempted to poison him during dinner. Joe is last seen wandering the streets of Paris as an escape, but Marianne (Tati Gabrielle) could be close behind after Love’s warning.
Will Marianne kill Joe after Love’s warning?
During season three of You, Joe meets Marianne, quickly falling in love with her over the course of the season.
The two can’t be together though as Joe is still with Love, that is until the pair confront their relationship problems in their own twisted way.
Joe once again proved he is always ahead of the game, figuring out early on his wife, Love, had planned on poisoning him.
He managed to kill her before she can kill him, in a brutal sequence where the two went head-to-head.
Following Love’s death, Joe frames her for all the horrific acts the pair committed, even framing her for his own, individual crimes.
Joe may have fled town and moved to Paris after the murder, but Marianne is still on his mind.
Before the third season came to an end, Love warned Marianne what Joe is like, leaving her with suspicions after Love’s death.
Love’s death may have shocked fans, but it was always the intention for the showrunners.
Speaking to Bustle, showrunner Sera Gamble said: “We always planned to do this two-season arc with [Love], and we talked about it with [Pedretti] the day we met her.
“It’s always really tempting, especially when you’re working with actors of this calibre.”
Joe and Marianne’s relationship potentially represents a great change in the killer, one which he is now more willing to accept.
Gamble continued: “I think that’s a bit of insight and growth for Joe, that he’s able to recognise at the end of the season that he maybe isn’t the best parent at the moment.”
It isn’t known what Marianne’s intentions are for the fourth season, but she will be keeping her guard up if and when the two meet again.
For viewers hoping the two will start a proper relationship in the next season, Gamble isn’t too optimistic about it.
The co-showrunner revealed she thinks any kind of meaningful relationship between the pair will always be too much for Joe to handle.
Gamble added: “If [Joe] wasn’t murdering people all the time then maybe [he and Marianne] would coparent and read a lot of books and run a library … but that [relationship]’s just not gonna work.
“He does keep walking closer and closer to these truths about himself, but at the same time, he is still fundamentally working off of this principle — I personally think he’s mistaken — which is that you can find what you need outside of yourself in other people.”
Now Joe is in Paris, it is unclear what form season four will take.
There is the potential the series will relocate to the French capital, though this seems unlikely as it would mean the entire supporting cast would need to be replaced.
More likely, Joe will be forced to return to town, most likely for Marianne.
Once he gets there though, Marianne may no longer be as welcoming to him as she once was.
You season 1-3 are available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
